1st Wigton Baden-Powell Scouts excited to be back in group

Scout Land and the woodland owned by 1st Wigton Baden-Powell Scouts reverberated to the excited sound of Beaver, Cubs and Scouts enjoying meetings once again.
Cubs and Scouts enjoying meetings once again. Beavers have been exploring, had a scavenger hunt and learned about the many animals and birds on Scout Land.
Meanwhile, Cubs have been fire lighting and cooking, with a week of den building for the newest Cubs. Scouts had a fire competition to see who could light their fire the fastest and get it burning high enough to burn through a piece of rope, they have also each gutted a fish and then cooked it in newspaper over a fire, whilst older Scouts grilled their fish directly over the fire. ....

Wigton Scout group saddened as they are targeted by thieves more than once

1st Wigton Baden-Powell Scouts have been targeted by thieves, on more than one occasion.
The first happened a few weeks ago when a sign in their woodland was removed.
Group leader, Julie Bryceson, said: “Group leader Julie Bryceson said “It was more than a sign to us, it was a thank you to The Joyce Wilkinson Trust and Cumbria Community Foundation for helping us to purchase the woodland and this is the second time it has been uprooted, despite being positioned in concrete.”
Then, just a few days ago, a large number of wooden poles were stolen, despite being behind six foot high security fencing. ....

Apply for a cash boost for groups hit by covid-19 closures

Cumbria Community Foundation is urging more community groups in the Wigton area to apply for funding through the Joyce Wilkinson Charitable Trust Fund.
Joyce Wilkinson, who lived in Westward, left a lasting legacy to her community and a wonderful way to be remembered. Since the fund was managed by the Foundation in 2006, more than 91 local organisations have benefited from a share of £600,000.
One of the organisations to have benefitted year on year from grants is the Northern Fells Group, receiving a total of 26 awards. Other groups have included Wigton Baths, Chrysalis and Citizen Advice Allerdale.
Like many leisure facilities, Wigton Baths was closed for most of last year, resulting in a loss of income. The 115 year old community baths will continue to offer its facilities thanks to a grant for £5,000 meaning residents and school children can continue enjoying the wellbeing benefits of swimming. ....
