In Transit: With fewer cars on the roads in 2020, why did more people die in crashes?

In a year when thousands hunkered down at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people killed in traffic crashes spiked by 15.6% in Illinois.
And despite fewer vehicle trips, fatal crashes rose by 13%, the Illinois Department of Transportation reports.

Why is that?
Generally speaking, when there is less traffic, there is a temptation to exceed the posted speed limit, Illinois State Police Deputy Sgt. Delila Garcia said, adding that the agency could not speculate on the 2020 numbers specifically. The Illinois State Police is asking the motoring public to fight the temptation.
The state isn t alone. Across the U.S., miles traveled by vehicles dropped by 14.5% in the first nine months of 2020 compared to 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. But fatal crashes rose 4.6% nationwide January through September. ....

Lake County jail correctional officer Elvis Fejzic has received statewide recognition after he twice stopped jail inmates from committing suicide last year.
Fejzic was named Correctional Officer of the Year by the Illinois Sheriffs Association, officials announced this week.

Lt. Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County sheriff s office, said Fejzic stopped an inmate who was trying to choke himself with a bedsheet in August. Fejzic acted quickly, entered the cell and unwrapped the sheet from the man s neck. ....

CHICAGO (NewsNation Now) A music student is reunited with his beloved and valuable flute after leaving it on a Chicago train.
Donald Rabin says his flute is an extension of him. Worth $22,000, his grandmother left him the money to buy the gold and silver flute when she passed away in 2016.
“When she left that in her will I always brought her with me no matter where I went,” Rabin said.
Rabin was riding a Blue Line train from O’Hare International Airport on Jan. 29, during a layover before his return to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. ....
