Arts in the Sunset, AmTech, AC First Responders to revitalize area

Right now, major construction has been occurring in the lot along Plains Boulevard, prior to the road’s intersection with Western Street.
In five years, that lot will be undergoing what Rachel Flores, the executive director of the Amarillo Art Institute, calls a leveling-up.
“I think for the sake of the city, it just feels like we are leveling up our community. It feels like the things that (will be) offered (there) are things that are needed,” she said.
“Everything is getting this level up, truly.”
In the near future, that lot will be booming with new facilities from the Amarillo Independent School District, with the AmTech Career Academy; Amarillo College, with its First Responders Academy; and a revitalized Arts in the Sunset facility. Officials from all the entities hope that their relative proximity creates potential for teamwork and cohesion as the facilities are complete.  ....

Not in 621 days had a Minor League Baseball team celebrated a milestone such as this. On Sunday, the Iowa Cubs brought the drought to an end.
Led by starting pitcher Shelby Miller, four Triple-A Iowa pitchers including Tommy Nance, Brad Wieck and Ryan Meisinger combined for a no-hitter as their squad did enough at the plate to sink visiting Indianapolis, 2-0, at Principal Park.
Making his first appearance at Triple-A in the Cubs system, Miller got Iowa started on the right note with three stellar innings. The veteran retired the side in order in the first and third and faced only one over the minimum thanks to a one-out walk he issued in the second. Threading five strikeouts through his abbreviated outing, Miller threw 28 of 47 pitches for strikes. ....

Amarillo College refunds two of its bonds

Taking advantage of low interest rates, officials with Amarillo College announced during Tuesday’s Board of Regents meeting that it made the decision to refund two of the college’s six bonds, the bonds from 2011 and 2012, subsequently saving nearly $900,000 in interest.
Chris Sharp, the vice president of business affairs for the college, said the 2011 bond, costing $2.785 million, was refunded at an interest rate of 1.25%, saving $361,561 in interest.
“I’ve been doing this for about 20 years and this is the lowest rate I have seen on bonds,” Sharp told the board. “It’s really good.”
On the 2012 bond, which cost $10.55 million, it was refunded at a 1.77% interest rate, saving $526,509 in interest. Combining the savings from the two bonds being refunded, the college will not have to pay back $888,070 in interest.  ....

First Responders Academy, AmTech projects continue to make progress

The Amarillo City Council recently passed two measures toward the progress of two entities on Plains Boulevard, furthering that part of town as a potential education epicenter.
First, the council passed a resolution supporting the establishment of Amarillo College’s First Responders Academy. This helped start the process of getting federal funds to help with the project through District 13 Congressman Ronny Jackson.
According to previous Globe-News reports, entities are eligible to request federal Community Project Funding from current members of Congress. Organizations that are either a governmental entity or a 501c3 nonprofit, have to meet certain criteria to be eligible for funding for the upcoming fiscal year which include, in Jackson’s case, being based in District 13 and having an impact on its constituents. ....
