The Seafood Industry Needs a Net-Zero Commitment: No More Endangered Species Caught, Ever

The Seafood Industry Needs a Net-Zero Commitment: No More Endangered Species Caught, Ever
May 21, 2021
Seafood is one of the most globally traded food commodities, and demand for it continues to rise. As a result, levels of fishing in many areas of the world are becoming increasingly unsustainable, and the list of endangered marine and freshwater species grows ever longer. Companies within the seafood industry are increasingly willing to work with governments and conservation groups to shift the seafood market toward more sustainable and responsible sourcing. The world has been witnessing a series of virus spillovers from wild species to humans. The spate of infectious diseases in recent decades –  Chikungunya, Ebola, yellow fever, swine flu, bird flu, SARS, Nipah, Zika – all can be traced to biodiversity loss and the subsequent close interactions between wild species and human beings. Data reveals that infectious diseases have, in fact, tripled every decade since the 1980s, with nearly 60% of these originating in wild animals.
As we ring in yet another International Day for Biological Diversity, it’s time to acknowledge that the web of life is intricately entwined, and that every callous human action can have far-reaching implications – for other species, the planet, and us. ....

OPINION | SA's rich plant heritage: Fighting biodiversity loss

Gabi Zietsman
South Africa is unique in its biodiversity, which is facing threats in some quarters where European ideals of what landscapes should look like are perpetuated, writes
Alanna Rebelo.
A wave of solidarity is spreading across the world as the international community counts the days to the adoption of a new global biodiversity framework. This framework will be based on negotiations that will take place in the lead-up to the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in China from 11-24 October 2021 (#COP15).
On 22 May, we celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity, and we have an opportunity to increase our understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, locally and internationally. ....

Browsing through images of other species, you may begin to think that perhaps no other species is more ugly and useless than the human. Most birds can boast of their splendid plumage; that they facilitate seed propagation and soil enrichment and that they never foul their own nest. They are happy creatures, chirping away, eating what they can find, taking care of their young ones, and winging across oceans and mountains, dales and valleys. ....
