Actor Maisie Williams named first WWF Global Ambassador for Climate and Nature

Maisie Williams is appointed as the
first WWF Global Ambassador for Climate and Nature.
In a powerful announcement video, Maisie highlights how vital 2021 is in the fight against climate change ahead of this year’s critical climate summit, COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland, and as global leaders set ambitious targets to cut emissions which will limit warming and its impacts on people and nature. Maisie encourages people all around the world to unite and join her in using their voices and platforms, no matter how big or small, to talk about the need for climate action and apply pressure on corporations and policy and decision-makers. ....

The World Is Indeed Improving: A Response to Philipsen and Trebeck

I wish to thank Dr. Katherine Trebeck and Dr. Dirk Philipsen for their response to our lead essay. It is a pleasure to discuss important ideas with scholars who are searching for the truth and human betterment. Trebeck and Philipsen question “the human ability to invent itself out of the basic laws of physics” and call for “A Wellbeing Economy [that] positions the economy in service of human flourishing and true freedom; less precariousness and more dignity; fewer dirty industries and more businesses who put their workers and communities front and center.”
I agree that humanity still faces many problems, but I ask, along with the British historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, “On what principle is it that with nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us.”[1] Below, I outline a number of ways in which the world has become a better place over the last few decades and propose that many people are already living in a Wellbein ....

Broken Homes And Hearts: The Little Blue Penguins Of Waiheke Island

Thursday, 15 April 2021, 12:37 pm
We need to prioritise our wildlife if we want to protect it. It seems so obvious, and yet economic motives nearly always trump ecological integrity.
The work on a planned marina at Kennedy Point on Waiheke Island where the kororā (little blue penguin) nest is a case in point. Developers were to begin the work this week by removing some rocks at the base of a wall where the kororā burrow. Due to the courage and fortitude of a protest group called Save Kennedy Point (SKP) the destruction of the penguin s home has been put on ice -at least temporarily. ....

The 9 Boundaries Humanity Must Respect to Keep the Planet Habitable

The 9 Boundaries Humanity Must Respect to Keep the Planet Habitable
All life on Earth, and human civilization, are sustained by vital biogeochemical systems, which are in delicate balance. However, our species due largely to rapid population growth and explosive consumption is destabilizing these Earth processes, endangering the stability of the “safe operating space for humanity.”
Advanced human societies emerged during an unprecedented period of stability on Earth. During the 12,000 years prior to the Industrial Revolution, our planet’s surface temperature varied by less than 1° Celsius (1.8° Fahrenheit) above or below the average for that entire period. As a result, life both human and wild thrived. ....
