As part of their ‘biggest ever public consultation’ on the future of electricity in the country EirGrid representatives gave a presentation and answered questions from councillors. The meeting heard that while a lot of infrastructural work is planned it will be to replace existing poles and lines and to secure the existing electricity supply. Michael Mahon, chief infrastructure officer with EirGrid, assured councillors there are no proposals for new infrastructure as part of this consultation process. ....

For the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week , The UN is calling on policymakers to act for low speed streets worldwide, limiting speeds to 30 km/h where people walk, live and play. 30km/h speed limit introduces calmer, safer roads and shorter braking distance. It gives the driver a better view of their surroundings and makes it easier for them to see any pedestrians crossing the road, cyclists and other vehicles and allows more time for drivers to react to the unexpected. ....

Taoiseach Micheal Martin spoke in the Dáil where he asked for no more appeals regarding the granting permission for the Glanbia plant. “That project is of immense economic importance to the region and also to the expansion of the dairy industry,” said Mr Martin. “It has gone through a very lengthy process already it has gone through the judicial process. I would appeal that there be no further appeals against this project now, given the fact that the courts have ruled very clearly in relation to it and that many, many jobs depend on it. There has to be balance in terms of how we all behave in society. ....
