Planning nightmare continues for Kilkenny farmer

Kilkenny farmer Shane Phelan is refusing to accept a designation of “urban agriculture” on his farmland. Phelan was one of a small group of farmers whose land in and around Kilkenny city was placed on the vacant site register in 2018. Some but not all of those lands have now been given this new designation.
“Based on my past experience with the county council, I have every reason to be concerned,” says Phelan.
“The vacant site register in Kilkenny city was badly constructed and deeply unfair.” ....

The trojan efforts of Kilkenny Civil Defence was acknowledged at the month meeting of Kilkenny Council Council with members praising them for their work, especially during Covid-19.
Katherine Peacock made a presentation to members and outlined the work that she does along with a team of dedicated volunteers. Ms Peacock also highlighted the need for a new home for Kilkenny Civil Defence and this was supported by several members.
During the ongoing national emergency the team of volunteers completed 350 Covid-19 related duties with volunteers giving 2,112 hours of time and effort supporting their communities. Duties included packing and delivering 340 care boxes to the elderly, children with disabilities and vulnerable families, 100 medical transports to hospitals, doctors and Covid Assessment Units and administrative support to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service for 5 weeks. ....

Hopes Thomastown library funding will be approved

Funding for the ambitious new library project in Thomastown is hoped to gain approval early this year.
To facilitate the work the library will be temporarily moved from its current location into the space beside the Community Centre in Thomastown.
At the recent Callan Thomastown Municipal District meeting, director of services Mary Mulholland said a new funding application had to be submitted for the project because the library plan is now bigger than the original version.
“The new library will be over 500 square metres in size and will be future proofed,” Ms Mulholland said. ....

Shocking details of ‘a shameful chapter’ of Irish history reveal 177 babies died in just 38 years at the Kilkenny County Home.
Their individual graves are unmarked and many institutional records have been destroyed. It has also been revealed that many Kilkenny mothers were sent to the now infamous Bessborough home in Cork and Sean Ross Abbey in Tipperary, from the County Home.
The heartbreaking figures reflecting the stories of mothers and their babies have been set out in the final report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission, published on Tuesday. ....

Music Generation is one of the positive stories of 2020 - a group of people who refused to allow a pandemic hamper their success.
In November young people from Music Generation Kilkenny release their debut single titled Feel The Victory.
Following an intensive virtual song-writing camp, the young people of Music Generation Kilkenny wrote, performed and recorded Feel The Victory at the DRUM Youth Centre, in partnership with Foróige.
