Should Gov't promote plant-based diets to tackle the climate crisis? 1 in 3 Brits think so….

Subscribe Should Gov’t promote plant-based diets to tackle the climate crisis? 1 in 3 Brits think so…. By Flora Southey A new survey commissioned by The Vegan Society suggests a significant number of Brits would support plans and policies that promote plant-based eating to help combat climate change. In 2019, the UK became the first major economy to commit to climate neutrality by 2050. This means it has less than 30 years to transform its economy into one championing net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In December last year, the Government followed up with new plans to achieve at least a 68% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade, compared to 1990 levels – representing the fastest reduction rate of any major economy.

Young people call for urgent climate action at UN Environment Assembly

Young people call for urgent climate action at UN Environment Assembly Photo: IISD / 19 Feb 2021 The COVID-19 pandemic is drawing young people around the world into the fight against climate change, as witnessed this week during the Youth Environment Assembly. The gathering, which is being held virtually, as part of the UN Environment Assembly, is the planet’s largest youth-led environmental event. It has zeroed in on climate change, which participants described as a dire threat to the planet. This year’s Youth Environment Assembly saw the release of UNEP’s GEO-6 for Youth – a report targeted at 15-24-year-olds, written with the intention of translating high-level scientific messages into a language that is accessible and actionable. This age group makes up one-sixth of the world’s population and is crucial in the fight against climate change.

Plant-based vs meat: the new battleground for health, ethics and sustainability

RICKY WILSON/STUFF Stuff reporter Josephine Franks tries a new take on a Kiwi classic. (Video first published on 14 November 2019) Meatless meals are on the rise, as greater numbers of people adopt vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets and supermarket shelves reflect changing preferences. But one expert says the plant-foods good, meat bad, dichotomy isn’t quite so simple. So what’s the beef? The adoption of plant-based diets is being driven by ethical and environmental concerns. But diets that include meat such as carnivore, paleo and keto are also on the rise and a faithful league of proponents highlights the benefits of regeneratively raised meat for both planetary and human health, nutritionist and author Dr Cliff Harvey says.
