Just three weeks into the summer, the heat in much of the nation has claimed lives in the Pacific Northwest in record numbers, threatened water supplies and set the stage in the West for what is expected to be another catastrophic fire season. (Alisha Jucevic/The New York Times) Western states braced for another extreme spike in temperatures this weekend after a recent heat wave in Oregon and Washington killed nearly 200 people and endangered laborers in fields and warehouses.

A heat wave broke records in the Pacific Northwest Now what?

View Comments Temperatures in states like Oregon, Nevada and Idaho expect above average temperatures this weekend, increasing about 10 degrees above normal. It s going to get warm again in the Pacific Northwest, but not as warm as it just was, said Ryan Adamson, a meteorologist at AccuWeather. States like those who experienced the heat wave in late June have been developing plans to adapt to the rising temperatures due to climate change. The heat wave that singed the Pacific Northwest with record-breaking temperatures became dangerous to those living in the area. Authorities say hundreds of deaths may ultimately be attributed to the heat that engulfed Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada.

If it wasn’t for them I probably would have shut down [Cheerful Tortoise]. We can’t make it.”    Nichols started working at Cheerful Tortoise as a server in 1999 when she was 21. She purchased the bar, along with the sister bar Cheerful Bullpen also located downtown in 2008. According to Nichols, there have been five owners who have owned both bars in their history. Cheerful Bullpen has been in operation since 1948, Cheerful Tortoise since 1951.
