Owner Amy Nichols discusses COVID-19 restrictions effect on the bar, community and social media
 
Cheerful Tortoise, the fabled family-owned dive bar located on Portland State’s campus known for its dollar-beers, karaoke, and quirky also occasionally inflammatory daily marquee messages, celebrated its 70th anniversary this year. 
 
 
 
“I didn’t actually think I would survive the second [shutdown],” Nichols said. “Luckily I had some friends provide some extra funds that helped me. If it wasn’t for them I probably would have shut down [Cheerful Tortoise]. We can’t make it.” 
 
Nichols started working at Cheerful Tortoise as a server in 1999 when she was 21. She purchased the bar, along with the sister bar Cheerful Bullpen also located downtown in 2008. According to Nichols, there have been five owners who have owned both bars in their history. Cheerful Bullpen has been in operation since 1948, ....

Portland restaurants complain about high risk COVID category change

Bars and restaurants near Providence Park are excited to see the Portland Thorns return to the pitch Friday night.
But the new COVID-19 restrictions that followed Multnomah County being returned to the hogh-risk category put a damper on the excitement. The county had been categorized as moderate risk until April 9.
Amy Nichols, who owns The Cheerful Bullpen at 1730 S.W. Taylor, St., said it s been an extremely difficult year. They had to convert part of the bar into a store just to survive. Thorns games typically bring in a big crowd, so they stocked up on food and scheduled more employees. ....
