(WTVA) - Friday evening, Dr. Bill Hilbun was named as the Junior Auxiliary s Outstanding Citizen of the year. Due to the pandemic, this year s Charity Ball was a virtual event. Members of JA surprised Dr. Hilbun at his home prior to the event. Dr. Hilbun, 85-years-old, has dedicated his life to serving those around him. Born in Centreville, Mississippi, Dr. Hilbun has grew up in Gloster, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi Medical School, with an Internship and Pediatric Residency at the UMMC. ....
As promised, here’s some additional information on our inaugural “Spirit of Carlsbad” awards, which is being co-hosted by the City of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Current-Argus, the Ricky Garcia Foundation and the United Way of Eddy County. We are now accepting nominations for five different awards: Humanitarian of the Year, Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Student Humanitarian of the Year, Student Outstanding Citizen of the Year and Nonprofit Agency of the Year. We’re planning to give out these awards, and a few others, in May. The humanitarian awards are for a person or couple who donated time and resources to assist their fellow citizens throughout 2020. Outstanding citizen awards are for a person or couple who made a major impact on Carlsbad through civic involvement. Nominees must be a resident of Carlsbad or South Eddy County. For the two student awards this year, we’re looking for a graduating high school senior (Class of 2021). Our graduating seniors have been ....
He was 96 years old. His health declined fairly quickly after his wife, Virginia, died on Oct. 10, said his daughter Katherine âKittyâ Zuckerman, one of the coupleâs six children. âThey would have celebrated their 73rd anniversary on Jan. 10, so itâs not a surprise that she left a huge void in his heart,â she said. As news of Zuckermanâs death spread, friends and family remembered not only his long political career â he served on City Council for more than a decade, then eight years as mayor â but his love of family and community. âHe understood and looked out for everyone. He was just a people person. He loved everyone, and everyone loved Charlie,â said former Mayor Elizabeth âLizâ Minor, who served with Zuckerman on City Council beginning in 1980. âHe was a wonderful mayor for the city â and just a good man.â ....
On his 90th birthday last month, former Defiance County commissioner and Central Local superintendent Darrell Jones was treated to a big surprise. On Nov. 17, 90 years after Jonesâ birth in 1930, well-wishers gave him drive-by greetings and birthday wishes at his home in Mark Center. He said more than 100 cars went by that day, using the drive-by option due to the coronavirus situation. âThey were backed up and across the railroad track (in Mark Center),â Jones said. âThat was nice. I didnât expect anything like that. It was a surprise.â The support Jones received that day may not have been surprising to an observer. As the former superintendent of Central Local School District, the county schools and a three-term county commissioner, Jones has made plenty of friends. ....
