Oregonians donated record $5.2 million to Cultural Trust in 2020
SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) – Donations to the Oregon Cultural Trust surpassed $5 million for the first time ever in 2020, as generous Oregonians responded to the cultural community’s urgent need due to losses suffered during the pandemic.
The $5.2 million in donations represents a 13 percent (close to $605,000) increase over 2019 and will support grant awards to cultural organizations across the state this summer.
“We asked Oregonians to help us protect Oregon culture and their response exceeded our expectations,” said Cultural Trust Executive Director Brian Rogers. “These funds will go a long way in helping us support the cultural community’s recovery in 2021.” ....

True whaling story is at the heart of Big Read


ENTERPRISE — Fishtrap’s Big Read 2021, which is online-only again this year, is a true tale of resilience and survival — In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick. The month-long event kicked off this week.
The National Book Award-winning tale is the story of the whaleship Essex which, in 1820, was the target of a sperm whale attack. The 85-foot long whale — perhaps the largest of that species anyone had witnessed — rammed the ship and stove it in. The attack and the sinking of the Essex were the basis of Herman Melville’s ending for his 1851 novel, Moby-Dick. ....

Arts organizations receive Small Operating Grants


Small grants that often make a large difference in ensuring arts access for Oregonians, especially in rural areas, have been awarded to 97 statewide arts organizations by the Oregon Arts Commission for Fiscal Year 2021.
Awarded to arts organizations in virtually every region of the state, Small Operating Grants are designed to provide support to arts organizations with budgets under $150,000. Eligibility is limited to organizations who have operated as an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit for two years or more and provide ongoing, sustained artistic programming and outreach programs. Each organization received $1,159.
At the Coquille Valley Arts Association, a FY2020 Small Operating Grant award supported the purchase of a Peter Pugger Pugmill for the pottery department. The equipment recycles scrap clay that would otherwise end up in a landfill. ....
