Subscribe Scientists rally behind Nutri-Score in response to scepticism in Spain: ‘These attacks are based on personal opinion, not science’ By Flora Southey In the countdown to Spain’s national implementation of Nutri-Score, the labelling scheme has encountered ‘attacks’ in traditional and social media, says Professor Jordi Salas-Salvadó from Rovira I Virgili University. According to Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, nutrition labelling scheme Nutri-Score is due to rollout across the country in the first four months of 2021. The scheme ranks food from -15 for the ‘healthiest’ products to +50 for those that are ‘less healthy’. Based on this score, the product receives a letter with a corresponding colour code: from dark green (A) to dark red (F). ....
EU mulling trade barriers for unsustainable food imports: ‘The EU alone will not save the planet’ The EU is working to clean up its own food supply chain, from farm to fork. But is this enough? MEPs raise concerns that accepting imports of unsustainable agri-food products is ‘inconsistent’ and ‘unethical’. The European Union has pledged to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To get there, the Commission is implementing a handful of strategies under its Green Deal. These cover biodiversity, industry, the circular economy, and the most relevant for those in the agri-food sector: The Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy. MEPs have raised concerns that even if the EU achieves a sustainable food system, accepting imports from third countries that do not have their houses in order, would ‘undermine sustainability’. Is realizing a sustainable food system across the bloc enough? ....
Encouraging EU shoppers to make the right choice: ‘Food sustainability is in consumers’ hands’ The consumer is integral to the success of a healthy and sustainable Farm to Fork strategy. How is the European Commission supporting shoppers to make better diet choices? The European Commission’s Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy, unveiled in May 2020, aims to engage all players along the supply chain – from, as the name suggests, farm-to-fork. In an effort to improve human and planetary health, the Commission has set a host of actions directed at the agricultural sector. These include reduction targets for chemical and hazardous pesticides, and fertilisers, as well as improved animal welfare. ....
Typical marketing instruments – such as colour coding and scale – are being used to influence consumer purchasing behaviour, argues EDA board member Valentina Zanetti. Mars, amongst others, does not agree. The European Commission is yet to reveal what front-of-pack (FOP) labelling scheme it plans to roll out by the end of 2022. It has confirmed that whatever format the nutrition label takes, it will be harmonised and mandatory. The planned introduction of a such a scheme – examples include Nutri-Score, Traffic Light, NutrInform Battery, and Keyhole – has been welcomed by a good number of health experts, retailers, and food makers. Others, however, argue that such simplified, colour-coded schemes serve as a marketing tool for industry. ....
Should reformulated junk food ever receive Nutri-Score ‘A’? The case against an across-the-board algorithm Front-of-pack nutrition labelling schemes that use across-the-board algorithms – such as Nutri-Score – allow for ‘discrepancies’, whereby a dark green ‘A’ ranking does not necessarily mean a healthy choice, argues Voedingsjungle’s Manon van Eijsden. The European Commission plans to introduce its harmonised, mandatory front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labelling scheme by the end of 2022. While the Commission has yet to reveal what this FOP labelling scheme will look like, a number of Member States and food manufacturers are campaigning for Nutri-Score to be rolled out across the bloc. Backers include governments in France, Switzerland, Belgium, and food brands Nestlé, Danone, and Kellogg. ....
