The Meskwaki Nation has announced the death of tribal leader and Native American rights activist Donald Wanatee who passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday at the age of 88. Wanatee is being remembered as a dedicated advocate for not only the Meskwaki Nation but for Native people more broadly.
According to a statement released by the Meskwaki Nation, during the course of his activism, “Wanatee was often one of the few Native Americans in the room, whether it was a classroom, meeting room or a Rotunda, and he did not take the responsibility lightly. ....

The state of Oklahoma is home to 38 federally recognized sovereign nations. In 2003, The Oklahoman reported on which tribes are indigenous to Oklahoma. They are the Osage, Caddo, Kiowa, Comanche and Wichita.

Indian Relay comes to Oklahoma
Tribes from across the country are coming to Oklahoma to promote three-horse relay race.

PAWHUSKA, Oklahoma– On Memorial Day weekend, Osage County Fairgrounds will be hosting the Indian Relay races bringing approximately 70 teams from different tribes.
According to Linwood Hisbadhorse, Sr. (Northern Cheyenne) owner of Hisbadhorse relay team, this event started many years ago. He stated the race is a big event, teams coming from the Northern, Western and Central parts of the United States.
“Indian Relay is a three-horse relay around a mile track,” Hisbadhorse said. “This is promoting Indian relay in the southern country.” ....
