Ioway Creek: Decades before name change, a Native teen led the cause in Ames

Ames Tribune
Editor s note: This story has been updated to remove an incorrect description of the gender make-up of the Ames City Council in 1994; to reflect the lack of clarity on whether Stubben had the chance to speak before that council; and to clarify that a packet of paperwork on the name change was required by a federal governmental organization.
Nearly three decades ago, 16-year-old Fawn Stubben prepared to stand before the Ames City Council to talk about what she said was the real meaning behind a local creek s name: Female genitalia.
But that conversation never happened.
Stubben, whose mother is from the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe and father is from the Ponca tribe, wanted to explain why the name of Ames Squaw Creek needed to change. ....

Op-ed: Indigenous Tribes Are Reviving Traditional Hemp Economies

Related
More than 20 years ago, Alex White Plume, a leader of the Oglala Lakota, planted his first hemp crop on Wounded Knee Creek, on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. I call White Plume “the Hemperer.” He’s considered to be one of the grandfathers of the cannabis economy for Native people. Like John Trudell, the great Dakota philosopher and musician, White Plume always said, “Hemp is the way.”
But in 2000, Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided the reservation and seized White Plume’s crop. In fact, there were several raids on his crop between 2000 and 2002. Two years later, he was ordered to stop growing. In 2016, the federal ban was lifted and in 2017, White Plume partnered with Evo Hemp to make hemp supplements. He’s just beginning again. ....

Despite State Lawsuit, New Tribal Casino Opens In Park City

A new casino owned by a Native American tribe opened Tuesday in Park City.
The Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma built the CrossWinds Casino after receiving approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior last May, a decision the state of Kansas is seeking to reverse.
CrossWinds Casino was operating in a temporary gaming facility for months while the new 20,000-square-foot building was constructed. The casino, located near E. 77th Street and I-135,  features hundreds of slot machines and video gaming machines, a bar and café, and a high-limit lounge.
The casino is in Sedgwick County Commissioner Lacey Cruse’s district. She said the casino has the potential to expand the local economy by attracting more people to that growing area of the county. ....

Wyandotte Nation scores victory

After more than a decade of legal wrangling, including a lawsuit filed by the State of Kansas, the Wyandotte Nation will finally see its CrossWinds Casino open in Park City on March 2, 2021.
The 20,000 square foot casino is located at 777 N Jackpot Way in Sedgwick County and will reportedly feature

Kelly Carpino, Chief Executive Officer for the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma (WTOK), the economic arm of the federally recognized tribe, said their team is excited to introduce the new casino to Park City and the surrounding communities and that like all of its gaming properties the focus is on providing “a fun, clean atmosphere with ....
