For 37 years, Cathy and Wayne Johnston had success as owners and managers of the iconic Ruthie’s Run in Lake Placid. While doing so, they created jobs, supported a wide range of initiatives as part of the Lake Placid Business Association, and provided locals, seasonal residents and visitors a great place to shop. Ruthie’s Run is closing largely because the Johnstons haven’t been able to find someone to take the business, a challenge that’s being replicated throughout the North Country as more and more business owners are getting ready to retire. ....

Why are you running for this position?
I’ve been appointed to many village work groups over the years to help with different initiatives. I’d like to serve as a trustee this next term to contribute my many years of management and people skills to the many projects Lake Placid has in the works. The Main Street redesign, affordable housing projects, Route 86 resurface, to name a few. Open communication during these times is going to be vital to the success of these projects.

What are your qualifications?
I have management experience at a Fortune 500 business. I’ve also co-owned The Bookstore Plus since 2006 and just started a new wholesale and distribution company. I’ve been on the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism board the past nine years, including serving on the executive board as treasurer the past two years. LAKE PLACID Staff at the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism are planning their tourism marketing strategy for the Lake Placid/High Peaks Region around two major issues this year: the coronavirus pandemic and the Main Street reconstruction project.
During a virtual informational meeting on Feb. 1, ROOST CEO Jim McKenna, Chief Operating Officer Mary Jane Lawrence, Marketing Director Michelle Clement and Lake Placid Regional Marketing Director Bethany Valenze detailed the 2021 marketing plan for the Lake Placid/High Peaks Region. A successful Holiday Village Stroll in 2020 | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

Even with navigating the pandemic, the Lake Placid community was able to host a safe and successful Holiday Village “Mini” Stroll in December.
2020’s Holiday Village Stroll included a virtual run, a Main Street scavenger hunt, to-go craft kits, and two virtual storytimes. All of this would not have been possible without the support of community sponsors and volunteers.
