Ellwood City School District makes plans for $3.6 million from stimulus

ELLWOOD CITY – School district leaders have an answer to the age-old question, What would you do if you had a million dollars? Or, more accurately, an answer to the lesser-known question, What would you do with an extra $3.6 million?
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Ellwood City Area School District is set to receive $3,662,014 in Elementary and Secondary School Relief (ESSER) grants from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP), the $1.9 trillion stimulus package signed into law by President Joe Biden in March. Though definite decisions haven t been made on spending yet, district officials are planning to use the money to close the learning gaps created by COVID-19, provide additional educational and emotional support for students and tackle some larger instructional initiatives. ....

Ellwood City Farmers Market set to spice up the summer

ELLWOOD CITY Get ready for peaches, pies, baked goods, berries, garlic, goodies, jams, jellies and greens because the Ellwood City Farmers Market is coming back.
This year, the market will take place from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday between June 5 and Oct. 9 in the municipal parking lot at 500 Beaver Ave., and will feature lots of local meats, produce and products, as well as live music and entertainment, so that residents can get groovy while getting their groceries.
The market, funded by an anonymous grant, is organized by Ellwood City Revitalization, part of the Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce, and overseen by Co-curb Masters Katy Mook-McGrath, owner of Katy s Homestyle Bakery and More, and her husband, Michael McGrath. ....

Ellwood City teachers and staff will get J&J vaccine

ELLWOOD CITY – With a turbulent start to the second semester, education and support staff at the Ellwood City Area School District are ready for some shots of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, of course.
Gov. Tom Wolf announced last Wednesday that the state will prioritize Pre-K-12 public and non-public school staff to receive the newly approved Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, and some faculty and staff at ECASD will be among the first to get it.
I m just happy that our staff can get these shots, said Superintendent Wes Shipley.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the state has been slotted to receive 94,600 doses of the vaccine. Those doses will be distributed to state intermediate units based on the proportion of Pre-K to 12 school employees in each IU s region, and site operations will be overseen by the Pennsylvania National Guard and AMI Expeditionary Healthcare LLC. ....

Area students return to hybrid learning

Students in Beaver and Lawrence counties returned to blended in-person and remote learning this week, with others likely to make the transition in February.
Pennsylvania’s Department of Education urged school administrators to implement full remote learning in late November following high COVID-19 transmission rates in multiple counties. Most local districts – reporting several positive cases in staff and students – abided by the guidance.
Acting Secretary of Education Noe Ortega earlier this month encouraged districts to offer some in-person instruction to elementary pupils as early as Jan. 25 if proper social distancing and sanitizing efforts are in place.
The state also recommended in-person instruction be offered to students with disabilities and those learning English, and advised schools to move younger students to a blended model of learning. ....
