CAIRO (Reuters) - The last ships stranded by the grounding of a giant container vessel in the Suez Canal should pass through the waterway on Saturday, according to the canal authority, which said an investigation into the incident would report its findings soon.
Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), said 85 ships were expected to pass the canal from both sides on Saturday. They will include the last 61 ships out of the 422 that were queuing when the Ever Given container vessel was dislodged on Monday, thus ending the backlog of shipping that built up during the crisis, he added. ....

Five killed in Myanmar protests, civilian leader says people should defend themselves

(Reuters) - Security forces killed at least 22 anti-coup protesters in the poor, industrial Hlaingthaya suburb of Myanmar s main city on Sunday after Chinese-financed factories were set ablaze there, an advocacy group said. A further 16 protesters were killed in other places, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said, as well as one policeman, making it the bloodiest day since the Feb. 1 coup against elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The Chinese embassy said many Chinese staff were injured and trapped in arson attacks by unidentified assailants on garment factories in Hlaingthaya and that it had called on Myanmar to protect Chinese property and citizens. China is viewed as being supportive of the military junta that has taken power. As plumes of smoke rose from the industrial area, security forces opened fire on protesters in the suburb that is home to migrants from across the country, local media said. It was horrible. People were shot before my eyes. It will never ....

U.S. 'alarmed' by frequency of attacks on Saudi after Houthis target oil heartland

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States on Monday expressed alarm at genuine security threats to Saudi Arabia from Yemen s Iran-aligned Houthis and elsewhere in the region after attacks on the heart of the Saudi oil industry, and it would look at improving support for Saudi defences. Earlier in the day, the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh said Washington was committed to defending Saudi following Sunday s volley of drones and missiles, including one aimed at a Saudi facility vital to oil exports. We continue to be alarmed by the frequency of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Escalating attacks like these are not the actions of a group that is serious about peace, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. We understand that they face genuine security threats from Yemen and others in the region. We will look for ways to improve support for Saudi Arabia s ability to defend its territory against threats, Psaki told a Washington news briefing. Saudi-led coalition authorities said most of Sunday s drones ....
