Explosion in Yemeni city of Marib kills at least 12, death toll may rise

CAIRO (Reuters) -At least 12 people were killed on Saturday in an explosion near a petrol station in the Yemeni city of Marib which members of the Saudi-backed government blamed on a missile strike by Houthi forces. A medical source told Reuters dozens of people, many of them badly burned, had been taken to Marib General Hospital and 12 of them had died of their injuries, including five children. The rest are receiving treatment and we expect the number of victims to rise, the source added. Confirming the explosion, the Marib Governorate blamed the incident on a missile fired by the Houthi militia fighting a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen s civil war. It said on Facebook that 14 people had been killed. The health and information ministers in the internationally recognised Yemeni government also blamed Houthis for the attack. More than 17 killed and injured, including this child burned by Houthi Rocket (attack) on Marib city today, Health Minister Qasem Buhaibeh wrote on Twitter alongside ....

By Hyonhee Shin and Joyce Lee SEOUL (Reuters) -Leaders of South Korea s largest conglomerates urged President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday to pardon Jay Y. Lee, the jailed vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, to maintain the country s edge in the chip industry. The plea was made during a luncheon between Moon and chiefs of four major business empires - Samsung, Hyundai, LG and SK - designed to boost economic cooperation after Moon and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed to bolster the global supply chain for high-tech manufacturing. Lee, the 52-year-old heir of the world s biggest memory chip maker and second-largest contract chip manufacturer, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after being convicted of bribery, embezzlement and other offences. SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won asked Moon to consider a petition for Lee s release that was submitted in April jointly by five business lobbies including the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry headed by Chey, according to Moon s spoke ....

DUBAI (Reuters) - The Saudi-led military coalition engaged in Yemen thwarted an imminent Houthi attack using an explosives-laden boat south of the Red Sea, Saudi Arabian state media said on Monday.
A coalition statement carried by state media said the Iran-aligned movement - which it has been battling for more than six years - continued to threaten maritime channels and global trade.
The Red Sea is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes leading up to the Suez Canal, with thousands of transits made annually through the Bab al-Mandab waterway at its southern tip. ....

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan s election commission approved on Friday the holding of three referendums in late August that could affect both the island s relations with the United States and its energy security if they are passed.
Referendums have increasingly been used to resolve contentious issues such as same-sex marriage, though they need a turnout of at least 25% of some 19 million eligible voters to be valid, with a majority voting yes to get passed.
The Central Election Commission has deliberated on, and approved, three referendums, it said in a statement. ....
