Suspect hospitalized after firing at police

KENDALLVILLE — A traffic stop in Fort Wayne led to a pursuit and ended with gunshots fired between police and a LaOtto man just outside the Johnson Mobile Home Park off Waits Road early Thursday morning.
The suspect, Justin R. Weikel, 40, was transported to an area hospital, according to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brian Walker. Weikel s condition was listed as stable as of 7:55 a.m.
Initial reports indicated Weikel had been shot, but police later said that might not be the case. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Spring cleaning

ALBION — Call it a spring cleanup — law enforcement style.
The Noble County Sheriff’s Department organized a multi-agency warrants sweep Wednesday, which resulted in 13 people being arrested as of 4 p.m.
The sheriff’s department had the assistance of Avilla, Ligonier, Kendallville and Wolcottville police during Wednesday’s operation, as well as the Noble County Department of Child Services and the Noble County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
“We reached out to the chiefs,” Noble County Sheriff Max Weber said. “We all work well together. We’re in it for the same common goal — to make our communities safe.”
“I’m always proud to be a part of a collaborative event like today,” Noble County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Mowery said. “Noble County law enforcement is an outstanding team, and we work well to serve the citizens of Noble County. The importance of events like today, where virtually ever ....

Noble County running distracted driving patrols today

ALBION — With Distracted Driving Awareness Month underway, the Noble County Traffic Safety Partnership is joining law enforcement agencies across the state and nation for a one-day enforcement campaign called Connect 2 Disconnect.
Today, officers will be conducting high-visibility patrols to remind motorists about the dangers and consequences of texting and distracted driving.
Connect 2 Disconnect is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
“Everyone knows it’s dangerous to text and drive, yet we still see people on their phones behind the wheel every day,” said Noble County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Carey Coney. “Taking your eyes off the road, even if it’s just for a couple of seconds, could end in disaster. If we all do our part, we can put a stop to distracted driving and prevent these senseless tragedies from occurring.” ....

Sheriff to ask for manpower

ALBION — Noble County Sheriff Max Weber told the Noble County Council Monday that he plans to ask for additional manpower when budget hearings come around this August.
“I want to plan on adding a couple of officers,” Weber said. “I don’t want any less than two.”
Weber provided the council with a detailed report comparing Noble County to counties with a similar population, and then compared that to the number of deputies those communities have.
The Indiana counties of Henry, Noble, Lawrence, Dubois, DeKalb, Marshall, Jackson and Shelby all have populations between 40,000-50,000, according to data provided by Weber. Noble County ranks No. 1 in population of those counties at 47,945. ....
