AUBURN â When Tasers first became a tool in the police officerâs belt nearly two decades ago, it was standard practice that officers had to take a jolt from the Taser themselves before they could qualify to carry one. Today, itâs easier to carry a Taser for police â they donât need to be shocked to carry one. But itâs become harder to use one. In its early days, a suspect threatening to fight or refusing to obey verbal commands could be Tased. In the last four or five years, case law has determined that a subject has to be actively resisting arrest, according to Auburn Police Department Cpl. Sean Miller. ....
KENDALLVILLE â A traffic stop in Fort Wayne led to a pursuit and ended with gunshots fired between police and a LaOtto man just outside the Johnson Mobile Home Park off Waits Road early Thursday morning. The suspect, Justin R. Weikel, 40, was transported to an area hospital, according to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brian Walker. Weikel s condition was listed as stable as of 7:55 a.m. Initial reports indicated Weikel had been shot, but police later said that might not be the case. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle. No officers or civilians were injured, but an unoccupied DeKalb County police vehicle was struck with gunfire. ....

Sheriffâs departments from DeKalb, Noble and Steuben counties report sharp increases in the number of people who have run from the police in a vehicle: ⢠DeKalb County Sheriff Dave Cserep reported that from 2017-2018 there were approximately 24 vehicle pursuits in his county. From 2019 through the first quarter of 2021, there have been 45. ⢠Noble County Sheriff Max Weber said the number of pursuits in his county jumped from 21 in 2019 to 31 in 2020. ....
