Updated 5/5/2021 11:45 AM With the theme of Neighbors Serving Neighbors, more than 550 volunteers representing multiple churches set out to serve in the community during an annual day of service called CareFest. On Saturday, May 1, the congregations of Wheaton Bible Church, Iglesia del Pueblo, and Tri-Village Church led the volunteer effort with work that included helping to distribute food at a food pantry, creating a memorial butterfly garden at a local elementary school, a bike parade at a nursing home, landscaping at a women s shelter and painting and cleaning homes. ....

The gates weren t set to open until 7 a.m. and the distribution was set to start at 9 a.m. One woman, who also happens to be the first in line, said she s been there since 2:20 a.m. The woman asked to be kept anonymous, but she did tell ABC13 that she s there because she has four kids, a mother and a brother to feed. Since the winter storm last week, she said she s lost a lot but she s thankful for her neighbors. ....

On the holy day of prayer and fasting, four Poplar teenagers broke into a church and caused extensive damage, according to Tulare County sheriff s deputies. At 5 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were called to the 18900 block of Avenue 144 for a burglary at the Iglesia Del Pueblo Church. When they arrived, deputies found the front and back doors were broken and the church had been ransacked. Church members posted a video of the damage on social media. They broke tables, chairs, and with knives damaged sanctuary seats, the church s Facebook post stated. The suspects forced their way into the church through locked doors and caused about $15,000 in damage, according to deputies. The thieves then took about $15,000 worth of music equipment and other items. ....
