Michigan governor pushes for school reopenings as Ann Arbor school board reverses decision to remain virtual

The drive to reopen schools in the state of Michigan has reached an advanced stage. In a press conference Wednesday, Democratic Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer announced that 85 percent of Michigan school districts are currently open to in-person learning and that she is “pleased that 97 percent of the school districts will be reopened by March 1st.

ANN ARBOR – A GoFundMe organized by parent group Ann Arbor Reasonable Return has surpassed its $30,000 goal in under 24 hours.
As of late Friday morning, the group has raised $31,630 to establish a political action committee in the wake of the School Board’s sudden change of plans during its Wednesday meeting to vote next week on staying virtual for the remainder of the school year. ....

‘We’re running out of time’: Ann Arbor parents rally to advocate for option of in-person learning

They want kids to have an option for in-person learning.
Ann Arbor Reasonable Return held the rally to press AAPS to commit to a date for a return to in-person classes. AAPS has been in a remote learning format since March, but parents want their students to have the choice to learn in person.
“The preponderance of the evidence has shown that it’s safe to do so if you have mitigation in place, and the district has told us that they do,” said Kathy Bishop, an AAPS parent and Michigan Medicine employee. “There’s really just no reason that our kids have not had the option to go back.” ....

Brothers Mark and Gordie Comstock stood beside an Ann Arbor park sign in 2019, never dreaming they would spend the entire next year taking hundreds more just like it.
