ANN ARBOR, MI - As an associate professor at the University of Michigan with some experience teaching in the hybrid format this year, Sara Soderstrom understands what public school teachers are going through in balancing remote and in-person learning.
Knowing the importance of the in-person experience, though, Soderstrom held off on sending her youngest son to an early kindergarten program this fall, deciding instead to wait a year to enroll him in kindergarten as progress toward teacher vaccinations and reducing community spread of COVID-19 continue. ....

ANN ARBOR – A GoFundMe organized by parent group Ann Arbor Reasonable Return has surpassed its $30,000 goal in under 24 hours.
As of late Friday morning, the group has raised $31,630 to establish a political action committee in the wake of the School Board’s sudden change of plans during its Wednesday meeting to vote next week on staying virtual for the remainder of the school year. ....

In the midst of a county-issued stay-at-home recommendation for students at the University of Michigan (UMich) the second of its kind since the fall as well as the recent state-mandated shutdown of the school’s Athletics Department, multiple local publications and corporate advocacy groups are aggressively pushing for the resumption of in-person learning as well as non-essential educational services in the Ann Arbor area.
The purpose of the Washtenaw County Health Department’s (WCHD) recommendation, which was issued on January 27, was to “slow the spread of COVID-19, including the more easily transmitted B.1.1.7. variant.” As of Friday, 28 cases of the more contagious B.1.1.7 variant were identified in Washtenaw County and nearby Wayne County.
