Local roundup: Two big innings propel Newport softball past Hanover Staff Reports Modified: 5/19/2021 11:12:11 PM NEWPORT The Newport High softball team used a seven-run second inning and an eight-run fourth to pull away for an 18-5 win over Hanover on Wednesday, bumping the Tigers’ record to 7-1 on the season. Newport overturned an early Hanover score with a two-run first, then took over with 12 hits. Winning pitcher Tanya Sanchez (five strikeouts, one walk, two HBP) helped herself with a walk, single, double, triple, three RBIs and four runs scored. “I actually feel pretty good,” Newport coach Sam McNeel said. “Tanya’s doing extremely well on the mound for us. We’ve got a good catcher (Emmah O’Connor) behind the plate. . I think we can play with just about anybody.”

Local Roundup: Thetford-Rivendell softball gains first win of season Modified: 5/14/2021 1:40:10 PM THETFORD Thetford-Rivendell softball trailed Twin Valley 9-3 after two innings at home on Thursday. But after a pep talk from head coach Jesse Soulia, the Panthers made a big comeback and won 26-14 for their first victory of the season. The Panthers (1-3) scored 10 runs in the third to spark that comeback. “Tonight, I watched my team come together and support each other on and off the field,” Soulia said. “Players playing in places that they had not played before. Hits were contagious tonight and I surely enjoyed seeing all the smiles.”

Local roundup: Jacks break out the bats Jenna Hood Modified: 4/23/2021 10:26:07 PM WINDSOR A potent offensive attack was more than enough for the Windsor High softball team, which routed visiting Fair Haven, 17-5, in six innings on Friday afternoon at MacLeay-Royce Field. “The whole lineup, 1-9, did their job and contributed to the win,” Windsor coach Heather Stearns said. “I’m very happy with how aggressive we are this year. We swung the bats very aggressively, put the ball in play and made them make plays defensively.” Adi Prior led the way for the Yellowjackets with two singles and a double. Jenna Hood had a double and a single. Paige Kleefisch had a pair of base hits. Windsor collected 11 hits as a team.
