After several years of discussing and debating what to do about a sagging borough building roof, Saxton Borough Council announced this week that two bids to replace the roof have been received. Council President Lester Meck told members that two separate contractors came to the borough and inspected the body of the roof, which covers the borough office and space once occupied by the Broad Top Senior Citizens Center that eventually moved out of the building. Meck did not wish to publicly disclose the name of the bidders or the bid amounts due to a possible misunderstanding on the part of one of the bidders as to the scope of the entire project. ....
With flowers and trees in bloom so is a growing trash problem throughout Saxton Borough that has its council concerned. Saxton Borough Council on Monday evening expressed concern over a growing trash problem in different areas of the borough and adjoining Liberty Township. Mayor Alan Smith feels it is time to address the problem through enforcement of borough ordinances against the accumulation of trash. Smith said there are problem areas around the borough where the accumulation of bags of trash are sitting around in plain view. Borough manager Jamie Foster said she received complaints about trash from containers blown over by the wind. ....
Saxton Borough Council Monday evening listened to a proposal for the possible development of a 22.3-acre parcel of land owned by the borough across from the gLeaf Medical Cannabis plant along Liberty Street. Saxton native and now Liberty Township resident Dawn (OâNeal) Chamberlain told council she and her husband are landlords owning several borough properties. She said they âflipâ houses or purchase and renovate them and put them back on the tax roll. Chamberlain said she and her husband would have liked to create a multi-million dollar development on a 10.7-acre parcel of land they owned, but realized it was too small to carry out their idea. The only other parcel of land large enough to fulfill their idea is the property owned by the borough. ....
Saxton Borough resident Lester Meck last week was retained for his eighth year as Saxton Borough Council president. Councilman John Hoffner was retained as vice president. Retention of the two top offices was one of many made during councilâs reorganizational meeting held prior to its regular meeting, held at the borough office. Other employees retained included police officers David Buseck and Logan Torntore at a salary of $19 per hour each, respectively, police officer Eric Calhoun at $17.50 per hour and police chief Fred Chadwick at $22.50 per hour. Long-time maintenance supervisor and part-time water employee Brian Wills was retained at 17.95 per hour. ....
