A pile of rubble was all that was left standing of the former Alpena Catholic Central High School building on Tuesday afternoon. Demolition on the building began last week in preparation for a single story office building to be constructed and leased to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The former high school’s gymnasium will become the new home for the Alpena Boys and Girls Club.
ALPENA The COVID-19 pandemic was expected to throw a monkey wrench in local development.
Thus far however, it has had little impact on projects planned before the pandemic and developers are considering future projects in the area. ....

We understand the coronavirus pandemic has been all-consuming for more than a year, so we can’t hold it against Alpena Public Schools officials that a long-planned review of the district’s curricula on cultural awareness and racism remains incomplete.
But our kids need those lessons, so we urge district officials to stay the course.
Then-superintendent John VanWagoner ordered district administrators to begin the review back in June, after the school board received a petition from alumnus John Mack, News staff writer Crystal Nelson reported recently. The petition, submitted shortly after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, had been signed by 275 people. ....

Schools preparing to begin state testing during pandemic | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA School districts in Northeast Michigan are preparing to administer state tests to students amid the latest surge of coronavirus.
Some Northeast Michigan school districts plan to move forward with the required testing next week, while other schools will be relying on alternate testing dates for their students, who are currently learning remotely from home.
Alcona Community Schools is among the districts that will have to test students on alternate dates. The school district transitioned to remote learning on Thursday, when a number of students and staff either tested positive or were forced to isolate because of COVID-19. ....

Alpena Public Schools extends deadline for company looking to build new bus garage | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA Alpena Public Schools officials has extended a deadline for the developer planning to build the district a new transportation facility in exchange for the property the district’s existing transportation facility is located at.
Grosse Pointe-based Vautgrand Holdings would like to construct an Aldi at the district’s transportation facility located at 1357 M-32 West.
The Alpena Public School Board of Education recently agreed to give the developer until March 22 to provide the final drawings and until March 31 to complete its Phase II environmental assessment of the property. ....

Mary Louise Shuler (Mary Lou) passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021 at The Fountains at Bronson Place in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the age of 91.
Mary Lou was born on Dec. 9, 1929 in Midland, Michigan to Bernard and Edna (Freeman) Niehoff. She was raised in Midland along with her brother Bernard (Ned) and sister Nancy Ann. Mary Lou graduated from Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952 and from the University of Michigan with a Master of Arts degree in Education in 1956.
She began her teaching career in Saginaw, Michigan where she met a fellow teacher and the love of her life, William (Bill) Shuler. Mary Lou and Bill were married Dec. 27, 1954 and were married for 60 years. The couple moved to Alpena, Michigan in 1956 where they raised their four children. She called Alpena home until 2019 when she moved to Kalamazoo to be closer to her family. ....
