ALPENA Alpena Public Schools parents have until Friday to sign their child or children up for summer school.
The district will be offering summer school opportunities to K-12 students, including two sessions of “A Summer of Literacy” for students in kindergarten to second grade, “A Summer of S.T.E.A.M.” for students in third through eighth grades, and a credit recovery program for students in ninth through 12th grades.
“The overall goal of the program of our summer opportunities is to keep kids engaged, to keep their minds active, and to work on key standards along the way,” Assistant Superintendent for K-12 Curriculum Meaghan Gauthier said. “It’s not to fully assess their learning gaps, and monitor those and provide personalized instruction, it really is to engage kids and keep the fun of learning through a variety of experiences.�

ALPENA In-person learning resumed for Alpena Public Schools students on Monday, after they spent the last two weeks learning remotely from their homes.
“It feels really good, we’re all happy,” Alpena resident Katy Samp said as she picked her daughters up from school on Tuesday.
Samp is able to work from home while her daughters, third grader Kylie Fitzwater and first grader Leah Fitzwater attended school remotely. Samp said the girls missed their friends and were happy to be back in school.

ALPENA Alpena Public Schools administrators will be strictly enforcing coronavirus safety procedures when in-person learning resumes on Monday.
District administrators said in a press release on Friday those safety procedures will include the proper wearing of masks, social distancing, and proper hand hygiene. It also includes students remaining at home when symptomatic, having a positive COVID-19 test result, or have recently been in close contact with a positive individual.
The district will also be offering rapid testing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Thunder Bay Junior High School. The junior high is located at 3500 S. 3rd Ave.
