ASSU Constitutional Council accepts case challenging sophomore presidential election constitutionality


Petitioners encourage Elections Commission to improve rank choice voting in future elections

The Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Constitutional Council voted 4-1 on Monday to accept a case disputing the constitutionality of the 2021 sophomore class presidential election, with a hearing scheduled for the following week. The decision came after a debate on whether the case in question, Sophomore Class President Slate Coalition v. Elections Commission, falls under the Council’s jurisdiction.
The petitioners, a coalition of three out of four sophomore class presidential slates that ran in the April election, requested that the Council hold the Commission responsible for improving rank-choice voting procedures in future elections. The petition argues that the lack of an “abstain” option and the failure to include candidates’ names next to their slate in the 2021 election violated the AS ....

With 82 seconds left in the first half of a women’s lacrosse game between No. 3 Syracuse and No. 15 Louisville, the Orange’s Meaghan Tyrrell intercepted a pass and sprinted downfield toward the opposing net. Just inches away from the crease and possibly her fifth goal of the day, Louisville’s Sarah Blalock decided a yellow card was better than letting Tyrrell score again.
She stayed down on the turf holding her face as Emily Ehle and Megan Carney frantically waved for the trainer. Seconds passed at a molasses pace, and things didn’t look good for the team’s current top player. But the Syracuse sideline breathed a collective sigh of relief when Tyrrell stood up and jogged off the field of play. ....
