UNC Survives, North Explodes, Top Four Seeds Advance: NCAA WDI Quarterfinal Takeaways

UNC 14, Stony Brook 11 This matchup was a battle until the waning moments of the game. There were plenty of points when it looked like the Seawolves were on their way to an epic upset, but the Tar Heels depth and composure proved itself yet again when it mattered most.  Carolina s Defensive Depth All season long, we’ve talked about the depth of the North Carolina offense. The dynamic duo of Ortega and Hoeg alongside the supporting cast of Growney, Warehime, Mastroianni and more.   The Carolina defense, however, has been mostly highlighted by the conversation of goalie Taylor Moreno’s stellar play in the cage. With that being said, in a game where Moreno didn’t

Championship Sunday: Heels, Cats, Minutewomen & More

Sunday May 2nd, 2021 4:30pm (Photo Courtesy: Northwestern Athletics)   In conference tournament action, North Carolina claimed its fifth consecutive ACC Championship, while Northwestern claimed its second-straight Big Ten title. In the A-10, UMass punched its ticket to the Big Dance, as High Point grabbed the Big South AQ. For a full rundown of this weekend s action, visit the ILWomen Scoreboard here. Draws + Goals = Winning Combination In Northwestern’s previous pair of wins over Maryland, the Wildcats outdrew Maryland 21-10 on March 27 and 24-14 on March 29. The score of those games? 20-10 and 25-12, respectively an almost identical stat line. It’s not groundbreaking to point out that possession gives a team a huge leg-up in any race; but when a team packs an offensive punch the way that Northwestern’s does, the draw is that much more important.

Takeaways: UNC, Syracuse Advance to ACC Championship

Friday April 30th, 2021 5:30pm (Photo Courtesy: Jeffrey Camarati/ UNC Athletics)  It seems quite fitting that the ACC Tournament is located at the University of North Carolina because it seems like they are certainly well on their way to a conference championship and automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was ACC semifinal day Friday, and some of the best lacrosse in the country was on display for all to see.   While UNC rolled Notre Dame, 18-4, the Syracuse vs. Boston College game was a much different dynamic. A game that went down to the wire, Syracuse narrowly edged BC, 19-17, for the second time in nine days. But as we discussed in Playing Catch-Up this week, the beating that these players took on their bodies in today’s battle does not leave much time to bounce back before facing the No. 1-ranked team in the conference and the nation.

ILWomen s Alyssa Murray Cometti, Halley Griggs, Tari Kandemiri and Amari Pollard break down the quarterfinal action. No. 1 North Carolina (15-0; 9-0) vs. No. 8 Louisville (5-10; 1-9) It’s been 732 days since an ACC women’s lacrosse champion has been crowned, an honor last bestowed upon North Carolina. The Heels remain the conference’s front-runner, cruising through its regular season at a perfect 15-0. The heavily-favored Heels are set to take on No. 8-seeded Louisville: a dark horse team that’s been knocking on the door. The Cardinals have put up quite a few fights in the ACC this spring, including a one-goal loss to No. 3 seed BC and two
