Erwin Utilities three steps closer to offering broadband to all Unicoi County residents

Nearly 300 homes in Unicoi County could soon have access to fiber optic broadband, which would mean the high-speed internet service would be available to everyone in the county.
The Erwin Utilities Authority already provides fiber optic broadband to all of its customers, but there were three areas in Unicoi County serviced by other electric systems.
After requests for service in those areas, the utility authority began the process of approval to provide broadband outside its designated coverage area.
Much like cable companies, utility companies have boundaries within which their services can be offered.
âThereâs a plan in place for all the county (to have broadband) except three pockets and we donât think itâs fair to the residents there,â President and CEO of Erwin Utilities Lee Brown said last week to the Town of Unicoi aldermen meeting. ....

If a study published this week is any indication, the Tri-Cities region could use a little more fiber in its diet.
According to research by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga economist Bento Lobo, Chattanoogaâs early development of a municipal high-speed broadband network generated $2.7 billion in economic benefits since it was built in 2009.
With an initial investment of $396.1 million, including a $111.7 million stimulus grant from the Department of Energy, utility provider EPB helped generate 9,516 jobs, brought $244 million in new business, landed $110 million in research projects and saved businesses $260 million in improved electricity reliability.
Thatâs an impressive return on investment that should spark the interest of economic development officials everywhere. ....

ERWIN - Robert Scottie (Scott) Street, 73 of Erwin, TN went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Saturday morning December 19, 2020 after a brief illness at the Johnson City Medical Center. Scott was a native of Mitchell County, NC where he lived the first seven years of his life and then moved to Erwin, TN.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents Dee and Mae (Mosley) Street, two brothers William Walter (Walt) Street, Reece Street and one niece as well as a longtime friend Everette Peterson.
Scott leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 49 years, Marsha (Foster) Street, daughter Summer (Street) Hopson and husband Jamie. He is also survived by two sister-in-laws Jean & Lynn Street, five nieces and several great nieces and nephews and their families as well as a long-time close friend Reverend Talmadge Brown. ....

Erwin Mayor resigns from dual seat on county commission

ERWIN â Newly seated Erwin Mayor Glenn White has resigned from his seat on the Unicoi County Commission.
White, who was sworn into office as Erwin mayor in late November, announced his resignation from the 2nd District commission seat at Mondayâs meeting of the townâs Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
In a brief statement read early in Mondayâs meeting, White cited duties of his new office that he said demand more of his personal attention than the duties he was required to meet as one of nine county commissioners.
White said he gave his letter of resignation to County Mayor Garland âBubbaâ Evely last week and expected the commission to act swiftly to appoint someone to serve out the unexpired two years of his commission term. ....
