Letters Dec. 24: Enjoying Christmas; bridge audit; spiritual health

The building is the physical part. The real church is the people, 24/7, wherever we may be.
I so want to hear Once in Royal David’s City sung by my friend (Sister) Mary. And I so want to hear my friend (Sister) Kathy sing Oh Holy Night.
But not this year. I may, however, on Christmas Eve stand outside on my deck and attempt to sing these two hymns myself. Will they be the same? No. But God will know that I am with each and every one of you.
Take care, keep safe, keep healthy.
Carolyn Hamar

2:00PM Water Cooler Christmas Eve 2020 | naked capitalism

Readers, I’m going to skip the Bird Song in favor of another sort of song:
I know it’s ridiculous the Anglican Church, traditional architecture, “processing” as a verb, “all in white shall be around us,” and anyhow this holiday is
really the solstice or Saturnalia but the beauty of “Once in Royal David’s City” always makes my eyes sting, with tears. I search for it, well, religiously on the NPR (sigh) radio schedule and have for years. Perhaps the reality of having been lovingly cared for as a child speaks to all of us; or the yearning to have been; or the yearning not to be or have been, but to do. And then there’s verse two: ....

The secret messages behind your favourite Christmas carols, deciphered

9. Joy to the World
The most-published carol in North America, it is also perhaps the only one composed by a banker. The tune is often credited as Antioch by Handel, but while the eagle-eared may spot apparent quotes from both Lift Up Your Heads and Comfort Ye from the composer’s Messiah, the tune is actually the work of Lowell Mason a Handel enthusiast.
8. Away in a Manger
Another carol, another controversy. Published in 1884 as Luther’s Cradle Song, Away in a Manger is not, in fact, the work of Martin Luther a myth that took more than 50 years to debunk. Printing the carol initially without a melody, the editors recommended that readers borrow the tune of Home! Sweet Home. But it was a lovely, lilting tune by William James Kirkpatrick, a Pennsylvania schoolmaster, that eventually stuck. ....

Christmas Eve at King s College, Cambridge, usually follows the same routine. There s a morning sound check, a lunch break, and then once the choirs are lined up to start, a red signal light flashes. One boy steps forward, unaccompanied, singing the perennial opening tune, Once in Royal David s City.
For many listeners, this is the moment Christmas begins. And while the audience will still hear all the same readings and carols as scheduled, the service released this year will be not be live. While the people at King s had planned as recently as the week before Christmas to broadcast live as usual, albeit without a congregation, they also prerecorded elem ....
