Every year on Christmas Eve, Carols from King’s is broadcast live on BBC Two at 5.30 in the afternoon. And every year, it begins in exactly the same way. Alone in the cavernous silence, the voice of the chosen choirboy, high and clear, climbs the three ascending notes that begin the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City. The sound echoes around the chapel and into homes all over the country, before the rest of the choir and the organ swallow up the soloist for the second verse. Point of Brew: A Christmas carol … we can do better

In a few days’ time, we shall celebrate Christmas. This is the great festival celebrating the birth of the Christ child, later to become Jesus of Nazareth, ultimately the Son of God whose Kingdom shall have no end.
Based on Bible stories we give gifts in imitation of the Magi, illuminate a tree and our homes with light recollecting the star that guided them to the manger, and gather with our families (next year, maybe) as Mary and Joseph were doing in Bethlehem.
At least, in normal times, we sing the lovely old and familiar carols: “Once in Royal David’s City,” “O Come All Ye Faithful!” and of course “Away in a Manger.” Last year and next year, churches will be full of Christians who cannot usually make it on ordinary Sundays but will see us again at Easter in a new hat for the resurrection. ....

Christmas has always been complicated for Chilly Gonzales. “I feel a bit oppressed by it,” the pianist and producer says. “The forced smile, the entire capitalist dream that we’re being sold.”
His unease with the season of good cheer extends to festive music. Jolly seasonal songs don’t really work for this Montreal-born son of Ashkenazi Jews who fled Hungary during the Second World War. In fact, they strike him as slightly dishonest.
“Christmas songs shouldn’t only be this performative optimism,” he says. “They should contain a grain of melancholy. Especially in 2020, it’s tone deaf to say, ‘Oh Christmas is all going to be ‘happy happy’. I try to live in the real world.” ....
