Massive Unemployment Scam Four Times Worse Than Thought, Victims Frozen Out of Their Own Accounts
Scammers have racked up an estimated $8 billion in benefits and taken from the pockets of a million and a half genuinely unemployed people, who then find themselves locked out of their accounts, as California’s unemployment fraud spirals out of control.
At first we thought it was funny when a Roseville woman used Dianne Feinstein’s name and social security number to scam $21,000 in fraudulent unemployment benefits. Though it seemed more serious when tens of thousands of prison inmates names were fraudulently used to raid California unemployment funds intended for out-of-work gig workers, in what Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said “appears to be the most significant fraud on taxpayer funds in California history.” At the time of those November and December reports, Bank of America estimated that the fraud totaled about $2 billion.     ....

LOS ANGELES, CA Sacramento County s chief prosecutor has informed Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon that her office will no longer grant him jurisdiction over any crimes that involve Sacramento County because of Gascon s special directives that have been criticized by victims advocates as too soft on crime.
Gascon campaigned on criminal-justice reform, but many were taken aback by the lengths he went to when he announced upon taking office that prosecutors would no longer pursue the death penalty, try juveniles as adults, seek cash bail for misdemeanor and non-serious, non-violent felonies, or add gang and other enhancements to criminal complaints. ....

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón who issued a directive barring prosecutors from seeking the death penalty in any new murder cases upon taking office last month announced Tuesday that he supports a measure that would ban the death penalty in federal cases.
The county s top prosecutor said in a written statement that he wholeheartedly supports legislation to be re-introduced by Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and incoming Senate Judiciary Chairman Richard Durbin, D-Illinois, to prohibit the use of the death penalty at the federal level and to require re-sentencing for those who are currently on death row in such cases. ....
