Interview On her fourth album, Sparkles & Debris, Canadian composer and songwriter Lydia Ainsworth laced her songs with spells. Like, literally, in the lyrics: Ainsworth incanting charmed collections of words amidst her songs, which mix orchestral, electronic, and rock n roll elements in shades too bright to initially scan as witchy. I did kinda set out to create almost like a spellbook, Ainsworth admits. There are a lot of spells interspersed. I feel like they could be useful in times of lockdown, they kind of reveal themselves to be very comforting. I have a love charm in there, I have a spell for creating a new direction in life, that one s called amaryllis. ....
Interview In the liner notes to Perdona Mamá, the debut LP for noisy Madrid punks Lisasinson, the band wear their hearts on their sleeve, declaring getting a group together has been one of the best decisions we ever made . This is a tribute, in part, to the joy the four friends feel playing together. I don t remember my life before the band. I don t remember what I was even doing, says drummer María Martínez, talking with Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground. The best two things of having a band is making songs with friends, and making people feel happy when they hear a song. ....
Interview International Pop Underground: Crumb s Ambitious Music Transcends Their Unambitious Beginnings When US outfit Crumb were formed, their beginnings weren t exactly auspicious. Drummer/producer Jonathan Gilad didn t want to make a Facebook page, and was pretty sceptical of how far they d go. The rest of the band didn t want to rehearse. We didn t really have much intention going into the project, says songwriter Lila Ramani. It was just like there were a few songs, and we wanted to explore those. We didn t think it d necessarily even turn into a real band band. Years on, Crumb have proved to be quite the real band. Their music is a shape-shifting synthesis of sounds and styles, and their attendant discography is impressive: following two great EPs, 2016 s ....
Interview Since debuting with 2011 s New Brigade, a furious blast of post-punk noise, Danish outfit Iceage have continually changed shape, making dark, oft-uncomfortable music that feels eternally restless. Along the way, that s meant some fans have been ruffled when one album has made a radical departure from its predecessor. We ve disappointed so many people over the years, smiles Iceage leader Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, speaking to Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground. And I ve always found some kind of enjoyment in that. Now that I ve disappointed people through several cycles over the years, I ve also seen that I ve proven them wrong. And fuck them, you know? ....
Interview International Pop Underground: In Pandemic Times, Kero Kero Bonito s Future Pop Turns Apocalyptic In their early days, English trio Kero Kero Bonito were routinely considered cute. Matching the bilingual Japanese/English lyrics of Sarah Midori Perry to bubbly, MIDI-heavy, video-game-ish production from Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled, they made post-modernist future pop in bright, sometimes lurid colours. A lot of people will say oh, whenever I listen to Kero Kero Bonito I feel so happy! Lobban offers. That take mistakes the fact that there s always a subversive quality to their music, a darkness lurking within. KKB s latest EPs, 2019 s ....
