Interview Dannika s debut album is called Gems. And the songwriter 28-year-old Melburnian Dannika Horvat is at pains to point out that the LP isn t named after valuable jewels, but something far more humble. Her favourite food-stuff: potato gems. Those kind of gems work far better as metaphor for the music. Dannika doesn t construct sleek, gleaming, expensive tracks, but writes songs that are warm, reassuring; providing her with something akin to three-minute comfort food. Interview On her second EP, Nilüfer Yanya wielded a title that was a pointed question: Do You Like Pain? Now, on her latest EP, the 25-year-old English artist is posing another surprisingly-deep, deeply philosphical question in its simple title: Feeling Lucky? I just found it a really interesting concept: luck, explains Yanya, in an interview on The International Pop Underground with Anthony Carew. Like, what is luck? How can luck be good and bad? Is it a thing, or is it an energy, or is it something that we create, or is it, like, a spell? We re not really in control of luck, but how much that goes on in our lives do we blame luck for, or congratulate luck for? Or what do you congratulate yourself for, when really maybe it s not you that s done something, you ve just been lucky. For me, it s a reflexive question, asking myself what I m lucky for, and why I m lucky. ....
Interview Cuushe – Japanese musician Mayuko Hitotsuyanagi – has just released her fourth album, Waken. It marks a return: it s Hitotsuyanagi s first Cuushe LP in seven years, and first major release since her 2015 EP Night Lines. Cuushe s time away from music was marked by the 2018 revelation that she d been the victim of theft, stalking, and harassment by fellow Japanese musician Ametsub. In the wake of her public declaration of her experiences, Hitotsuyanagi, in turn, received more online harassment and victim-blaming for daring to speak out. These experiences provide the background for Waken. Cuushe used music to both process her feelings and to be defiant, hoping that releasing a record would inspire other people, especially those who supported her for the stand she took. ....
