Interview Ratboys have a new record. Or, a new recording of old recordings. Happy Birthday, Ratboy does as it suggests: celebrating the Chicago combo s 10th anniversary by re-recording their earliest material. Formed by Julia Steiner when she was in college, the band has spanned her 20s, growing from a tentative recording project to an acclaimed outfit with three impressive records 2015 s AOID, 2017 s Printer s Devil to their name. Printer s Devil was released on February 28, 2020, coming out just before the world fell apart. The album was a chronicle of upheaval and change, almost presaging times to come. In the year since, Ratboys cultivated an online community through a run of streaming shows, staged an online telethon, and re-recorded their earliest songs. ....

Now that they re grown-up 20-somethings old enough to dare call their new LP, :3, more mature they re happy that their music, and their profile, attracts listeners who are just like they once were. Now, we ve realised that there s a lot of younger people and teenagers who listen to us, says the band s English-born member, Stephen Lyne. They re the same kind of teenagers that we were: art school students who are into anime, Japanese pop, etc. They re kind of what we were before. We can relate to those people. ....
Interview Lael Neale s first proper LP, Acquainted With Night, is an album whose making and themes percolate with isolation. Which makes it an album that feels in tune to recent pandemic history. The 33-year-old American artist has spent a life around music from her first exposure in utero at a Grateful Dead concert that my parents went to , to years playing as a singer-songwriter in Los Angeles but it was only when she came into possession of a four-track tape recorder and an omnichord (essentially the synthesiser equivalent of an autoharp) that she, finally, felt in command of her artistic fate. ....
Interview Sibille Attar released her debut album, Sleepyhead, in 2013. It s taken the odd Swedish songwriter eight years to finally follow it up, wiith the release of her second record, A History Of Silence. It took such a long time between LPs for a variety of reasons: Attar extracting herself from a major label contract ( I had a lot of anger to the situation, she says), getting knocked up , experiencing motherhood, and, then, finally, wondering how she was going to return to a career that was put on hold.
