Ajay Joshi Jalandhar, May 10 In spite of a cap on the price of RT-PCR tests by the Punjab Government, private laboratories and hospitals have been found overcharging. The state government has fixed Rs 450 for the RT-PCR test and Rs 300 for the rapid antigen test. However, private labs and hospitals in the district are charging Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 for the RT-PCR test. If the samples are collected from home, the charges are between Rs 800 and Rs 1,500. During a sting operation, Tagore Hospital charged Rs 900 for the RT-PCR while Atulya Lab asked for Rs 900-1,200. Another lab near Doaba Chowk charged Rs 900. ....
Jalandhar, May 7 The reduction in the deferral period for blood donation from 28 days to 14 has come as a relief as the blood banks had run dry owing to the vaccination drive. The decision was taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Wednesday. The task of arranging blood had become harder for NGOs and blood banks. Amid surge in Covid positive cases and intensified vaccination drive, the NGO reported to have serious dearth of rare blood groups. It is also directly affecting blood transfusion of thalassemia patients. Dearth of donors Trishla Sharma, a social worker, who looks after the regular blood transfusion of thalassemic children says, she has 24 thalassemia patients and needs 50 blood units monthly, however, the situation has become such that if she calls around 50 donors, only five turn up. ....
1049 Ajay Joshi Jalandhar, April 28 Private ambulance operators have been charging exorbitantly to transport patients to hospitals or carrying bodies to the crematorium. While the 108 emergency service is for free, it is not readily available to patients owing to the rise in the number of patients. Anil Kumar, an 108 ambulance operator said there were around 22 such ambulances in the district and for the past 45 days, each ambulance was ferrying 6-8 patients every day. The private operators have been minting money out of the miserable situation due to the pandemic. Ranging from Rs 1,500-Rs 3,000, the ambulance service operators are charging exorbitant rates in the town. Extra hundreds are added if the ambulances are carrying patients across the city borders. Unreasonable rates are also sought from people for carrying the bodies of Covid-19 patients to crematoriums. ....

While teachers are afraid of conducting door-to-door enrolment campaigning amid the surge in Covid-19 cases, the district Education Department has innovated various means to not only prevent teachers from contracting the virus but also to make the campaign a success. To motivate teachers to bring more students to government schools, now auto-rickshaw drivers and rickshaw pullers have been roped in to intensify door-to-door campaigning to improve enrolment in the district. The three-wheelers move from village to village making local residents aware of the changed picture of government schools. Government school teachers sitting in auto-rickshaws approach villagers and persuade them to send their wards to government smart schools. ....
