PTI edges out PML-N in keenly contested bypoll - Newspaper

SIALKOT: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) clinched the PP-38, Sialkot IV, seat by defeating the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in what turned out to be a major upset here on Wednesday.
PTI candidate Chaudhry Ahsan Saleem Baryar got 60,588 votes whereas PML-N ‘s Chaudhry Tariq Akhtar was polled 53,571 votes, according to unofficial results announced on Wednesday night. With the latest victory, the PTI has now two provincial assembly seats in Sialkot district out of the 11 Punjab Assembly seats.
There was a palpable sense of jubilation in the PTI and Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan, while speaking at the outhouse of the winning candidate, said a new face in politics had defeated the experienced politician in the bypoll. ....

Teachers trying new methods to improve enrolment in schools

The Education Department is apparently leaving no stone unturned to accelerate the enrolment drive in government schools. While teachers are afraid of conducting door-to-door enrolment campaigning amid the surge in Covid-19 cases, the district Education Department has innovated various means to not only prevent teachers from contracting the virus but also to make the campaign a success.
To motivate teachers to bring more students to government schools, now auto-rickshaw drivers and rickshaw pullers have been roped in to intensify door-to-door campaigning to improve enrolment in the district. The three-wheelers move from village to village making local residents aware of the changed picture of government schools. Government school teachers sitting in auto-rickshaws approach villagers and persuade them to send their wards to government smart schools. ....

Polling was held for over hundred civic bodies in Punjab on Sunday amid stray incidents of skirmishes at some places.
According to officials, seven people were injured in Rupnagar after workers of the ruling Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal clashed following a heated argument in Ward No.1 there.
Skirmishes and scuffles between activists of the Congress and the Opposition parties were also reported from Batala, Rajpura, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Samana, Rupnagar, Nabha, Nangal, Mohali and Ferozepur. ....
