Family Park could cost $30 million but isn t near any bus stops

Michelle Leah’s son loves parks. The central Topeka mother is the exact demographic Family Park is trying to attract, but Leah said she might struggle to visit the park s proposed location. She said she usually has transportation but doesn’t have a functioning car right now because it was totaled. Her limited access to a car would make it hard for her to get out to the proposed location of Family Park. “It could be a challenge if the bus was the only form of transportation that someone was relying on,” she said. “It’s great if we are building a new park. I think transportation would be key.”

A proposed design for Family Park was presented, vote expected soon

• Additional parking  “This project is important to me and seeing what potential and what opportunities for Topeka and Shawnee County exist with the development of this,” said Zach Snethen, principal at HTK Architects, who presented the proposed design at Tuesday night’s Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting.  Snethen touted the park s design and said it was a multi-month process of soliciting community feedback. While he likes the park s design, he said it doesn’t include everything that people requested.  Earlier surveys of the park showed some interest in a fishing pond, but Brian Sturm, a presenter at the meeting, said the design wasn’t practical.
