Coming off of a tough overtime loss on Saturday, there were no ill effects for the Washington boys’ soccer team last night when they traveled to Keokuk and stomped their way to an 11-2 win. The Chiefs (0-10) hung tough in the first half by taking a pair of early leads at 1-0 and 2-1, but back-to-back Emmanuel Raymundo goals in the 17th and 18th minute opened the floodgates for the Demon offense. They tallied three more scores before break and never looked back for the nine goal victory where six players found the back of the net. Noah Suchan led the way with a hat trick of three goals. Raymundo, Zac Stout, and Erick Ortez Jr. each had two and Luciano Marcelino as well as Adin Muff added one. Angel Mata dished out three assists and Stout had two. Cole Anderson managed 10 saves at the other end and even collected an assist while in goal. ....
A frigid night for soccer had Demon fans feeling warm by night’s end in Fairfield when the Washington boys utilized late game heroics to down the Trojans 2-1 in double overtime for their third win in a row. Recording seven goals in two games last week, senior Zac Stout picked up right where he left with a goal seven minutes into the game off of a pass from Ayden Frazer. The Trojans (3-2) found the equalizer 18 minutes before the break and a stalemate ensued. That 1-1 tally stayed true until three minutes left in the second overtime period when Angel Mata had a throw in pass to Fabian DeJesus. The junior collected himself and then drilled a 25-yard dart past the Trojan goalie for the golden goal and the celebration was on. Cole Anderson collected 11 saves on the other side for the Demons. ....
Birthdays. A time for cake, presents, and hat tricks? Zac Stout celebrated his 19th birthday in style last night with a three-goal performance that pushed the Washington boys’ soccer team past Burlington 5-1 in the Demons’ home opener. The newbies to the Southeast Conference in the Grayhounds found the back of the net first in the opening half, but with 10 minutes until break Stout scored his first to tie it up. The floodgates opened after that with Noah Suchan and Simeon Buie each scoring before the birthday boy finished off the hat trick with two more. Stout tells KCII Sports scoring on his birthday has turned into a tradition. “Last year I didn’t have the chance to because of covid, but my freshman and sophomore years I scored on my birthday. I really wanted to do that again today and I was lucky enough to get three. We passed really well in this one. Last game it felt like the opponent was passing around us, but today it was like we were passing around them so i ....
The theme of nail biting playoff games this week in Southeast Iowa continued on Thursday with the Washington boys’ basketball team suffering a crushing 49-48 season ending loss to Grinnell in a class 3A substate semifinal. As heard on KCII, the Demons were shorthanded once again playing without Lance Sobaski, but the Orange and Black threw the first punch with Trashaun Willis racking up 10 first quarter points and the home squad leading 15-11 after one. The Tigers’ 6’9’’ post player Owen Coffman started to take over recording 14 first half points and Grinnell flipped the script for a 31-25 halftime advantage. Coffman scored the game’s first six points of the second half to push the lead to a dozen when the Kasen Bailey led Demons started to chip away. The junior tallied 11 points after intermission and Washington slowly clawed their way back to a one possession deficit in the final minute. The Demon crowd erupted after Travis Leyden buried a triple from the left ar ....
