A frigid night for soccer had Demon fans feeling warm by night’s end in Fairfield when the Washington boys utilized late game heroics to down the Trojans 2-1 in double overtime for their third win in a row. Recording seven goals in two games last week, senior Zac Stout picked up right where he left with a goal seven minutes into the game off of a pass from Ayden Frazer. The Trojans (3-2) found the equalizer 18 minutes before the break and a stalemate ensued. That 1-1 tally stayed true until three minutes left in the second overtime period when Angel Mata had a throw in pass to Fabian DeJesus. The junior collected himself and then drilled a 25-yard dart past the Trojan goalie for the golden goal and the celebration was on. Cole Anderson collected 11 saves on the other side for the Demons. ....

The All-Conference wrestling teams were released by the Southeast Conference for the 2020-21 campaign and one Washington grappler was honored. Ayden Frazer was the lone representative for the Demons being named to the first team for his weight class of 182 pounds. The senior qualified for his first state appearance last month and won a match at Wells Fargo Arena. Despite missing over a month this season, Frazer finished with a 21-9 record and racked up 86 wins throughout his high school career. Demon Head Coach Brent Van Weelden tells KCII Sports Frazer has been a staple for this program for years. “He has been around a long time. A lot of youth tournament photos from years past have Ayden in them. He has grown up a lot, got stronger, and matured a lot mentally. He has been a mainstay and wants to continue to play this tough sport in college.” ....

Out of an initial field of 11 wrestlers from the KCII listening area, eight remain as the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines moves to day two. Four grapplers moved through Thursday’s day one with wins to stay in the championship bracket including Mid-Prairie’s Cael Garvey at 195lbs, Columbus’ Lane Scorpil at 113lbs and Chance Malone at 285lbs and Highland’s Bryce Thompson at 113lbs. Four other wrestlers dropped their opening match on Thursday but rebounded to win a second match and stay alive in the tournament’s consolation bracket. They include Washington’s Ayden Frazer at 182lbs, Mid-Prairie’s Josh Wallington at 220lbs, Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh at 106lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Cade Molyneux at 170lbs. ....
