No one had more representation on the 2020-21 Southeast Conference All-Conference Boys Basketball teams than Washington, as the conference champs had five players recently recognized by the league. Ethan Patterson was one of just two sophomores selected to the first team. The 5’10’’ marksman led the league with 61 made three pointers while shooting at a 40% clip from deep. The guard tallied 15.7 points per game, shot 89.7% from the charity stripe, dished out 59 assists, and created 29 steals. Kasen Bailey and Trashaun Willis were named to the second team. Despite missing part of the season due to injury, Bailey was fifth in the conference with 62 assists and made the second most free throws with 65. He tallied 13.9 points per game, hauled in 52 rebounds, and created 19 steals. The theme of nail biting playoff games this week in Southeast Iowa continued on Thursday with the Washington boys’ basketball team suffering a crushing 49-48 season ending loss to Grinnell in a class 3A substate semifinal. As heard on KCII, the Demons were shorthanded once again playing without Lance Sobaski, but the Orange and Black threw the first punch with Trashaun Willis racking up 10 first quarter points and the home squad leading 15-11 after one. The Tigers’ 6’9’’ post player Owen Coffman started to take over recording 14 first half points and Grinnell flipped the script for a 31-25 halftime advantage. Coffman scored the game’s first six points of the second half to push the lead to a dozen when the Kasen Bailey led Demons started to chip away. The junior tallied 11 points after intermission and Washington slowly clawed their way back to a one possession deficit in the final minute. The Demon crowd erupted after Travis Leyden buried a triple from the left ar ....
No one said it was going to be easy. A first round Class 3A substate game was nip and tuck from start to finish, but the Washington boys’ basketball team made enough plays down the stretch last night to hold off Oskaloosa for a 49-37 win. As heard on KCII, both defenses came to work in the opening half with a slow going first 16 minutes and the game was tied 23-23 at the break. Kasen Bailey kept the Demon offense afloat in the first two quarters with 12 points. Keaton Flaherty, who did not play in a 20-point loss to Washington earlier in the season, had a stretch of 10 straight Oskaloosa (2-19) points in the second half and the Indians found themselves up three late in the third. A 9-0 Demon run followed that gave the Orange and Black a lead they never relinquished. Oskaloosa was forced to play the foul game late where Ethan Patterson and Bailey knocked down seven of eight free throws to salt the game away. Bailey led the Demons with 20 points and Patterson added 17. Flahert ....
