US cyber-attack: Around 50 firms genuinely impacted by massive breach Published image captionHackers accessed major organisations by compromising software developed by Texas IT firm SolarWinds The cyber-security firm that identified the large-scale hacking of US government agencies says it genuinely impacted around 50 organisations. Kevin Mandia, CEO of FireEye, said that while some 18,000 organisations had the malicious code in their networks, it was the 50 who suffered major breaches. The US Treasury and departments of homeland security, state and defence are known to have been targeted. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Russia for the hack. So too have the chairs of the Senate and House of Representatives intelligence committees. ....

President Donald Trump downplayed the attack s severity - saying it was under control - and cast doubt on Russia s role, hinting at Chinese involvement. The hack, targeting software made by US firm SolarWinds, was found last week. However, it had been going on for months. Russia has denied any involvement in the attack. Among the US agencies targeted was the office that manages nuclear weapons. That government organisation, the US energy department, said however that the arsenal s security had not been compromised. ....

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned Dec. 13 that SolarWinds Orion products had been compromised and called to power these down immediately. The voting machine provider was among the firms connected to the SolarWinds Orion platform. CISA’s Emergency Directive 21-01 states that “SolarWinds Orion products … are currently being exploited by malicious actors. This tactic permits an attacker to gain access to network traffic management systems. Disconnecting affected devices … is the only known mitigation measure currently available.” ....

On Friday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said this week’s cyberattack dubbed by one U.S. official as “the worst hacking case in the history of America” was “pretty clearly” the work of Russians. “[T]here was a significant effort to use a piece of third-party software to essentially embed code inside of U.S. Government systems, and now it appears systems of private companies and companies and governments across the world as well,” Pompeo said. “This was a very significant effort, and I think it’s the case that now we can say pretty clearly that it was the Russians that engaged in this activity.” ....
