SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/  Palo Alto Networks (NYSE: PANW), today launched a rapid response program to help SolarWinds Orion customers navigate risks from cyberattacks. SolarWinds Orion products are currently being exploited by malicious actors to gain access to the company s systems, activity being tracked by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 as SolarStorm.

Energy Department Hacked, ‘National Security Functions’ Not Impacted: Spokesperson
The Department of Energy said that it was hacked by malware injected into its networks after a SolarWinds update, but that its national security functions were not impacted, including the agency that manages the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
“The Department of Energy is responding to a cyber incident related to the Solar Winds compromise in coordination with our federal and industry partners,” DOE spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes said in a statement to The Epoch Times.
“The investigation is ongoing and the response to this incident is happening in real-time. At this point, the investigation has found that the malware has been isolated to business networks only, and has not impacted the mission-essential national security functions of the Department, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). ....

The U.S. officials has revealed that Microsoft was included in the massive breach, but people familiar with the matter warned that it could just be the tip of the iceberg. The incidents affecting Microsoft and the software company SolarWinds Corp. may be just be a part of software supply chain attack that have been going on for months.

The U.S. government warned Thursday that removing the SolarWinds hackers from compromised environments will be a highly complex and challenging endeavor for organizations.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said that the group behind the SolarWinds breach has demonstrated patience, operational security and complex tradecraft in its attacks. CISA added it has evidence of additional initial access vectors beyond the SolarWinds Orion supply chain compromise, but noted that those other intrusion methods are still being investigated. ....
