The Fairfield High School board of education is set to meet this Thursday night at 6 in regular session at the FCHS Study Hall. Items on the board agenda include an update on the Gym Lobby Project. An executive session is scheduled for the annual evaluation of the district superintendent, and the consideration on hiring a part-time custodian and a full-time substitute teacher. The board is also expected to present a tentative date for the FCHS graduation and prom. The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting a total of 3,981,275 cases of the coronavirus in the state, along with 35,814 total deaths since the pandemic began in early 2020. The county case numbers over a one-week period were not immediately available, however information from the Centers for Disease Control tracker showed Wayne County with two new hospitalizations during a one-week period ending this past Thursday. Roy L. Fansler – Fairfield

Roy L. Fansler, 83, of Fairfield, died at 2:25am on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Skilled Care Unit. He had been a rural mail carrier for the Village of Geff. Roy was born on March 6, 1939, to Dale and Hannah (Walters) Fansler. He married Geraldine (Walker) Fansler on January 2, 1986. Roy attended Fairfield Community High School, Class of 1956. After high school, he began working as a carpenter for Charles Read Construction Co, where he worked until he was drafted into the United States Army, on July 2, 1962. He completed basic training and supply school at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, then was stationed at Kagrew Station, U.S. Army Security Station, Asmara, Ethiopia for 18 months. He was discharged as a Specialist 5th Class. After the army, he resumed working for his neighbor Charles Read Construction until he became a United States Mail Carrier out of the Geff, IL post office. 79-year-old Claren Lee Hosselton of Clay City died Thursday in a grain bin accident in northern Wayne County. Coroner Carrie Dagg said responders were dispatched to the scene and Hosselton was pronounced dead upon extrication shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday. An autopsy has been scheduled to assist in determining the cause of death, and complete results are expected to take several weeks. The Wayne County Coroner, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, North Wayne Ambulance Service, Clay City Fire Protection District and Flora Rescue responded to the scene. Severe weather moved through southern Illinois and the Ohio Valley region late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Wayne County was spared the worst of the weather, however the entire region was under thunderstorm warnings for a time late Friday night and early Saturday morning.
