A Beckwith Street man’s obligations of a $10,000 child maintenance bill, six children and his house to finish drove him to cultivate cannabis, a court heard Tuesday.
Rodney Alphonso Gill gave police that explanation when they executed a search warrant at his home on Labour Day and discovered 3.5 pounds of cannabis, the Crown told the District A Magistrate’s Court. The illegal substance had an over $7,000 estimated street value.
Police prosecutor Victoria Taitt said 15 plants ranging from two to five feet were found in Gill’s backyard behind a half-finished wall and another seven of about two feet were also found on the premises. ....

Two of this nation’s children were sexually violated within the last few months with one of the incidents resulting in pregnancy, according to charges filed in the law court.
The two separate cases came up before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes today where prosecutor Victoria Taitt put forward arguments for keeping the two men away from society at this time and the victims. Both  accused have been remand to Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds until May 31.
In the first case heard in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court a 27-year-old car washer is accused of raping his 11-year-old niece. According to the indicatable charge between September 1 and September 30, 2020 the man, knowing that the child is his blood relative, his niece, had sexual intercourse with her.  The St Michael man’s name is being withheld to protect the child’s identity. One of this island’s musicians appeared contrite before the law courts today on charges of possession and cultivation of marijuana.
Romel Ulric Bennett, the singer/song writer who goes by the stage name Sanctuary, a resident of St John, also faced charges of possession with intent to traffic and supply the illegal substance.
He pleaded guilty to all four charges before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes and was placed on a bond to keep the peace and be of good behavior for nine months on the cultivation charge, after his attorneys Michael Lashley Q.C. and Simon Clarke “persuaded” the Chief Magistrate on several mitigating features of his case. Two prison officers appeared before the law court today separately charged with breaching the COVID-19 protocols.
They are Ainsley Raymond King, of 3rd Avenue Alleyne’s Land, Bush Hall, St Michael and Kenlarry Cain, of Rosehill, Newbury St George.
Police charged King with leaving home on February 16 between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. when he was not part of an essential service or had an emergency. He is further charged with not wearing a face mask, face shield or face covering on the same date.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes. ....

A 56-year-old man who broke the island’s national COVID curfew when he went to pick coconuts on another man’s field is currently on remand at Dodds awaiting his fate.
David Henderson Haynes, of no fixed place of abode, was remanded to the St Philip facility after he pleaded guilty to stealing 27 coconuts worth $40.50 on February 7 belonging to St Clair Scott.
His remand also came after he admitted to contravening
Paragraph (1) sub-paragraph (2) of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (CURFEW) (NO.3) Directive which requires every person to observe physical distancing and associated protocols in the interest of public health.
