New Delhi [India], April 30 (ANI): The Centre on Friday decided to facilitate faster imports of key medical devices by relaxing the conditions for clearances under Legal Metrology (Packaging Rules 2011).
Considering the present pandemic situation of COVID-19 and for meeting the demand of medical devices, the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Government of India has permitted the importers of medical devices to import medical devices for three months from April 28 onwards, the government said in a statement.
The importers are subject to the condition that the importers shall make all declarations required under these rules immediately after import/custom clearance and before sale by way of stamping or putting sticker or online printing, as the case may be.

Amid a massive surge in COVID-19 infections across the country, the Government on Sunday said it has directed all major ports to waive all charges for ships carrying oxygen and related equipment.
In a statement, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said it has directed all major ports to accord the highest priority in the berthing sequence to the vessels carrying consignments of Medical Grade Oxygen, Oxygen Tanks, Oxygen Bottles, Portable Oxygen Generators and Oxygen Concentrators.

The import of medical supplies necessary in India’s fight against a recent surge in Covid cases have been granted full exemptions from customs duty.
In a meeting on Saturday chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to augment the availability of medical-grade oxygen, 16 oxygen and oxygen-related equipment have been declared exempt from basic customs duty and health cess for three months with immediate effect.
A Finance Ministry release said that the decision will boost the availability of these items as well as make them cheaper.

Items exempted from basic customs duty and health cess are medical grade oxygen, oxygen concentrator along with flow meter, regulator, connectors and tubing, Vacuum Pressure Swing Absorption (VPSA) and Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) oxygen plants, Cryogenic Oxygen Air Separation Units (ASUs) producing liquid/gaseous oxygen, Oxygen Canister, Oxygen Filling Systems, Oxygen Storage tanks, Oxygen cylinders including cryogenic cylinders and tanks, Oxygen Generators, ISO Containers for Shipping Oxygen, Cryogenic Road transport tanks for Oxygen.
Centre waives off basic customs duty on oxygen, oxygen-related equipment, COVID-19 vaccines for three months
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a meeting to review steps taken to boost oxygen availability in the country in view of surge in COVID-19 cases and emphasized that there was an immediate need to augment the supply of medical grade oxygen as well as equipment required for patient care both at home and in hospitals.
It was decided in the meeting to grant full exemption from basic customs duty and health cess on import of 16 items related to oxygen and oxygen-related equipment for three months with immediate effect. It was also decided that basic customs duty on import of COVID-19 vaccines be also exempted with immediate effect for three months.
