The two – Lachit Hazarika alias Brigadier Salim Asom and Bornali Asom alias Nayanmoni Chetia – were killed on September 20, the ULFA said in a statement on Tuesday sent to media houses in Guwahati. The execution took place in Myanmar where the outfit has its bases. Salim had joined the outfit in the 1990s. While Bornali had joined the outfit in the year 2021.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged Paresh Baruah, the leader of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), to visit Assam for a week and see the changes that have taken place since he left. Sarma said the atmosphere was different from what it was in 1982 or 1983 and that conditions in Myanmar had deteriorated, leading to many young ULFA members contacting the authorities, hoping to return. Talks with the ULFA could turn Assam into an "island of peace," Sarma said.
ssam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has said that he has been getting threats from militant organisations, not just from Assam, but from other states as well. The proscribed armed insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has publicly threatened Singh and has demanded that he should either stop staging bogus encounters against locals or leave the state.
Security Forces have intensified their efforts towards restoring normalcy in Upper Assam wherein in certain pockets United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) (I) is still conducting its nefarious activities, officials said on Thursday.
The woman in her Facebook post also hash-tagged the ULFA(I) commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah, and accused Assam police and the Assam government of ruining her life.
