The value of your elders : First Nation using youth to spread COVID-19 message

MORLEY, Alta. A First Nation in Alberta is turning to its youth to help spread the message to older members about the dangers of COVID-19. Three reserves in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains make up the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, where there have been only a couple of outbreaks of the novel coronavirus since the pandemic began. CEO Ryan Robb said the First Nation, including Morley about 70 kilometres west of Calgary, has faced a difficult challenge. Stoney remains the first language for an overwhelming majority of members, regardless of their age. “They have an extremely high language retention, even though we’re very, very close to a major city,” said Robb in an interview. “Quite quickly we realized we needed to get our information out in Stoney as well as English.”

It s been 9 months : COVID-19 long-hauler describes life-changing symptoms

CALGARY Most people do not die of COVID-19 but many who recover, even from mild cases, are left with affects weeks or months later, that can be life-changing. Calgary artist Stacey Robbins used to focus on custom-painted fashions, even selling a couple of pairs of her shoes to NFL players, but all that changed after getting sick. “Since COVID, with the tremor in my hand, I can’t do it anymore so I’ve had to put painting on pause,” said Robbins. And not just in the short-term. “It’s been nine months.” The 36 year-old was teaching at a conference in California in March when the pandemic hit. She and her mother both got mildly sick before tests were widely available but her doctor suspects it was COVID-19.
